Pac12 Power Rankings After Week 2
Week 2 of the season has wrapped up and Pac12 teams had a pretty good week overall. Teams are starting to settle into who they will be for the rest of the season, but that is not to say there has not been some big moves in the power rankings this week (looking at you Fresno State!).
Texas State (#1 last week)
Texas State maintains its spot at number 1 this week after beating rival UTSA 43-36. While any rival win is a good win regardless of the score there has to be some concern about the Texas State defense. Allowing 27 points to Eastern Michigan and then 36 points to UTSA is not a great way for the defense to start the year. Texas State has a massive game against ASU next week, a win could put them in contention to win at least 10 games this season.
Boise State (#2 last week)
This was a game where you just felt Boise State had to send a message after losing to USF in week 1. The USF loss aged pretty well however after USF went into UF and came home with a win. Boise State beat EWU 51-14 this week and looked dominant throughout. Boise State faces Air Force after a week 3 bye in what almost feels like a must win game for Boise State.
WSU (#4 last week)
WSU takes back the number 3 spot from SDSU after beating them 36-13. This game was an all around complete performance from the Cougs and inspires a lot more confidence in the team after a disappointing week 1 performance against Idaho. WSU has its first road test against North Texas this week before playing the Apple Cup in week 4. It will be interesting to see if the defense travels to North Texas this week.
Fresno State (#8 last week)
I got some hate from Fresno fans last week after having them dead last in the power rankings. Clearly Fresno State fans were right as they picked up a big away win against Oregon State this week. Even though it felt like Oregon State beat themselves, Fresno State put themselves in position to win all game and they took advantage of the opportunities the Beavs gave them.
Colorado State (#5 last week)
Colorado State pulled out a hard fought rivalry win over FCS opponent Northern Colorado. I was higher on CSU after their week 1 performance against UW but this week's performance has me questioning it a little bit. The one thing I will say is rivalry games are always tough no matter how good your rival is, so I will give CSU that. Colorado State gets a well timed bye week before playing UTSA in week 4.
Utah State (#7 last week)
Utah State actually moves up a spot after a 44-22 loss to Texas A&M this week. I felt like Utah State put up a great fight in an extremely tough environment and I really do think they are on the right track. They will be put to the test this week with a game against Air Force who is coming off a bye week. A win in week 3 would be a further sign that Utah State football is on the right track.
SDSU (#3 last week)
I had moved SDSU to #3 last week after a dominant week 1 performance but the top half spot was short lived for SDSU. SDSU went to Pullman and did not play a very good game. The good news for SDSU fans is they have a bye week and then get a chance to bounce back against Cal.
Oregon State (#6 last week)
Wow! Oregon State has truly earned the number 8 spot in these rankings this week. Oregon State by pretty much every metric outplayed Fresno State last week. However, a truly comical special teams performance left OSU with nothing to show for an otherwise pretty solid performance. The schedule certainly does not get easier for OSU as their next two games are against Texas Tech and Oregon.
