WSU Athletic Department Makes Strides to Improve Cougar Football Saturdays
Over this offseason the WSU athletic department has made some good improvements to the football weekend experience. As all Cougs know the big announcement (beer sales at Martin) has not been announced (at least not yet!). Let's dive into what the athletic department has announced.
August 30th vs Idaho
WSU kicks off the season against Idaho on August 30th. With a lack of cheap lodging options in Pullman, the athletic department is going to have Camping with the Cougs for the Idaho game. There are going to be 97 camping spots on Mooberry Track as well as the turfed field on Grimes Way. The cost for this is going to be just $250 for 2 nights, much cheaper than most lodging options in Pullman.
I believe that this will be used as a test run for larger scale Camping with the Cougs in the future. This idea is great especially for games earlier in the season where the weather should be good and moisture shouldn't be a factor. If this is a success it could be used as a way to generate more revenue in the future as well.
September 6th vs SDSU (Homecoming)
For homecoming weekend against SDSU there is going to be a concert featuring Wyatt Flores at Rogers Field on Friday night. This is another fantastic idea because it gives people more things to do before the game and it gives more incentive for people to come other than just the game.
November 15th vs Louisiana Tech
I am a really big fan of what the athletic department did here. They put a men's basketball and women's basketball double header on the Friday before the Louisiana Tech game. Not just any basketball double header either! Men's basketball will play their Apple Cup matchup against UW and women's basketball will play former Pac12 foe and women's basketball powerhouse Stanford.
I hope this will become a yearly thing for at least one of the home November games. Playing a basketball double header the Friday before a home football game adds more value to fans traveling long distances for football games and should help attendance for basketball as well. 10/10 move from the athletic department!
There will also be a Cougar Athletics Tailgate Trot. These will be 5k and 10k races around the WSU campus. After this event people will be able to make their way to a volleyball game at noon before going to the football game at 7pm. Again more events and more things for people to do when they come to Pullman!
Trunksthedj
Trunksthedj recently announced that he would be the DJ for all home football games in the 2025 season. This is a good step forward on in-game entertainment as well. Trunksthedj has been the Dj at home games in the past including 2023 games against Oregon State and Colorado (both great wins!). It is a positive that he will work every home game this season!
Beer Sales
There has been no announcement on beer sales at Martin stadium this season. It would be the cherry on top to all of the home football weekend improvements that we have seen this offseason. Beer sales would keep fans at Martin Stadium through halftime and the 3rd quarter and provide more revenue to the athletic department at a time where they badly need it.
Lights, Jumbotron, Sound System
Upgrades to lights, the jumbotron and sound system are all things that the athletic department has acknowledged need to be fixed but there are currently no funds to fix it. Hopefully this will remain a priority and we will see improvements here over the coming years.
