Pac12 Power Rankings After Week 6
This was not a good week for the Pac12 as far as results on the field. The Pac12 won just 2 games and one of those was a Pac12 vs Pac12 matchup. The silver lining is that Fresno State and SDSU both look really good and they look like they could be far ahead of schedule on their rebuilds. Fresno State and SDSU being good football schools in the new Pac12 is very important for the league so it has been good to see both schools with strong starts to the season.
Fresno State (#3 last week)
For the first time in a long time we have a new team in the number 1 spot! At one point early in the season I had Fresno State at number 8, wow really shows what I know! Other than the loss to Kansas earlier in the year Fresno State has looked very good. Fresno State will play Colorado State on Friday in a look at a future Pac12 matchup.
Boise State (#2 last week)
Boise State stays at number 2 because I did not feel like a loss to Notre Dame meant they should move down. When I look at the other 7 Pac12 teams I just don't think any of the other Pac12 schools would be able to travel to South Bend and beat Notre Dame. It is pretty clear that Boise State is not the same team they were last year, but I still think that they are a solid team and the number 2 spot still feels like the right spot for them on these rankings.
WSU (#4 last week)
WSU moves up a spot during the bye week thanks to the Texas State loss and Texas State dropping out of the top half of the rankings. WSU has a tough away game this week against Ole Miss. WSU remains ahead of SDSU thanks to the head to head win, but with a tough upcoming stretch for WSU I could see SDSU leapfrogging them in the rankings.
SDSU (#5 last week)
SDSU easily took care of Colorado State on Friday and the Sean Lewis era officially seems to be on the right track! SDSU is 4-1 on the season and heads to Nevada next week as they look to improve to 5-1 on the season. SDSU appears to have a legitimate shot to win 9 to 10 games this season. Nevada
Texas State (#1 last week)
I had Texas State solidly at the number 1 team for the majority of this season. But after a 1 point loss to Arkansas State on Saturday I just could not justify keeping them in the top half of my rankings.
Utah State (#6 last week)
Utah State maintains the number 6 spot in this week's power rankings coming off of their bye week. Utah State will travel to Hawaii in a tough travel week and take on a Hawaii team that has been pretty competitive all year. Utah State has a great chance to string together some wins over the next few weeks and put themselves in the discussion to make it to the Mountain West championship game.
Colorado State (#7 last week)
Colorado State got smoked by SDSU on Friday to drop to 1-4 on the year. Colorado State avoids the last spot on this list only due to the fact that Oregon State has had an even worse start to the season than them. I thought that Jay Norvell’s seat was after last week's loss to WSU but after the loss to SDSU this week you have to think that it is even warmer. Colorado State will have a chance to turn it around on Friday with their third matchup against a future Pac12 school, Fresno State.
Oregon State (#8 last week)
Oregon State has been shockingly bad this year in pretty much all three phases of the game. Oregon State relieved special teams coordinator Jamie Christian after the App State game. OSU will take on Wake Forest at home this week in yet another game that feels like it should be winnable for the Beavers.
