Pac12 Power Rankings After Week 9

For the first time this season, not a single team changed spots on this week's rankings. The top 3 schools, Boise State, SDSU and WSU have really begun to separate themselves as the class of the Pac12 this year. SDSU and Boise State both still have real chances to make the College Football Playoff, with their game against each other serving as a type of elimination game.

  1. Boise State (#1 last week)

Boise State stays in the number 1 spot after beating Nevada 24-3 on Friday night. While Boise State fans may have liked to see a more complete performance from the team, you can never complain about a conference road win. Boise State gets Fresno State at home this week before a massive game at SDSU on November 15th.

  1. SDSU (#2 last week)

SDSU stays in the number 2 spot this week but has a real claim that they should be number 1 on the list. SDSU shut out Fresno State 23-0 to earn their 3rd shutout win of the season. Of all the schools on this list SDSU currently has the best chance to make the College Football Playoffs. SDSU will host Wyoming this week in a game that has the potential to be another shutout win.

  1. WSU (#3 last week)

WSU retains the 3 spot this week after an impressive 28-7 win over Toledo. The WSU defense has been lights out the last 4 games and it is really starting to feel like the Jimmy Rogers era is on the right track. WSU currently sits at 4-4 on the season and has a real chance to not only make a bowl game but win at least 8 games this year.

  1. Fresno State (#4 last week)

Fresno State stays in the top half of the rankings due to the fact that the 4 teams below them have been underwhelming. Fresno State was shutout by SDSU last week. I said going into a two game stretch with SDSU and Boise State that it would be great for Fresno State to go 1-1. They will have a chance to do that with a game on Saturday against Boise State.

  1. Utah State (#5 last week)

Utah State suffered a disappointing loss to Bronco Mendenhall’s former school New Mexico 33-14. Utah State still sits at 4-4 on the year with a real chance to make a bowl game. That would be a great piece of momentum heading into Pac12 play next season. Utah State has the perfect chance to get its 5th win of the season coming out of their bye when they face Nevada on November 8th.

  1. Texas State (#6 last week)

Texas State was number 1 in these rankings for a couple of weeks this season and that was clearly not an accurate ranking. Texas State did not play this last weekend but lost to JMU on Tuesday 52-20. Texas State’s record in their time in the Sun Belt has been historically bad. It will be interesting to see if joining the Pac12 next year can help to raise the level of the program. Texas State will look to get back on track with a game against Louisiana next Saturday.

  1. Colorado State (#7 last week)

Colorado State avoided the number 8 spot only due to the fact that Oregon State has looked slightly worse than them this season. Hopefully for CSU this is rock bottom this year as they are coming off of a 28-0 rivalry game loss to Wyoming. Colorado State will get a much needed bye week before a tough matchup with UNLV on November 8th.

  1. Oregon State (#8 last week)

Oregon State remains at the bottom of the rankings coming out of their bye week. WIth Colorado State’s bad performances, for the first time in a while, Oregon State has a real chance to move out of the bottom spot in next week's power rankings if they can beat WSU this week. Something that will be interesting to watch this week is if we see a change at QB for Oregon State.
